The Roig Arena and its surroundings

The “Specific Amendment to the Roig Arena General Urban Development Plan (MPPGOU) and its surroundings” is envisioned as a new urban catalyst with international significance for Valencia.
Located in the Quatre Carreres district, near metropolitan landmarks such as the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias and Jardines del Turia, this project is initiated by Juan Roig with the purpose of connecting a fragmented urban fabric and activating a large area of underutilized land.
Based on a flexible and mixed urban planning approach, this new development combines culture, entertainment, sports, and public space to “build the city” and revitalize the area, integrating facilities and infrastructures of diverse nature:
- The Roig Arena, a multipurpose venue designed by ERRE in collaboration with the international architecture firm HOK, with a capacity of 20,000 people in concert mode (currently under construction)
- The relocation and improvement of the public school CEIP Les Arts
- A 2-hectare urban public park (under construction)
- The Car Park Roig Arena
A commitment to sustainability
The new plan aligns with the determinations of Valencia’s PGOU, incorporating an ambitious environmental sustainability strategy based on promoting green mobility, the use of renewable energy, and the application of passive solutions to ensure energy efficiency. For example, the ceramic façade of the Roig Arena is conceived not only as an architectural icon but also as a sun filter that helps reduce the building’s thermal load, while being a sustainable transport material as it is locally produced. The adjacent public park will act as an urban green lung, improving the microclimate and air quality of the area. Likewise, CEIP Les Arts incorporates large playgrounds and landscaped areas, adapting to educational sustainability standards. Meanwhile, the Roig Arena parking garage uses natural ventilation and lighting strategies to reduce its environmental and visual impact on the surroundings.
Internationally notable architecture with local identity
The Roig Arena, designed by ERRE together with HOK, stands out for its iconic ceramic skin made up of more than 8,600 louvers manufactured by the Valencian company Grupo Pamesa. The texture of the louvers evokes that of a basketball in homage to the sport that has driven the project. The arena will also be home to the men’s and women’s teams of Valencia Basket Club.
Social, economic, and cultural impact
At the urban level, the intervention strategically integrates with top-tier sports facilities such as the City of Rugby, the Municipal Pool, and L’Alquería del Basket. The design of the latter project, also by ERRE, was the seed that propelled the MPPGOU of Roig Arena and its surroundings. The future hosting of large-scale sports, cultural, and corporate events at the multipurpose venue will attract national and international audiences, energizing local commerce, boosting the local economy, and establishing this new development as an epicenter of international projection in the city of Valencia.
