85,000 SQUARE METRES OF OFFICE SPACE TO PHYSICALLY AND CULTURALLY TRANSFORM MERCADONA HEADQUARTERS, ONE OF SPAIN'S MOST POWERFUL COMPANIES.

Located in Albalat dels Sorells, the Mercadona Headquarters are conceived as a large-scale corporate campus, immersed in the agricultural landscape of the Valencian huerta.

Comprising four parallel, interconnected blocks oriented north–south, the project has a total built area of 85,000 m²: 40,000 m² allocated to workspaces and 45,000 m² to underground parking.

The first block houses the main entrance, service areas, and four training classrooms, while the remaining three blocks accommodate the office spaces, each with a floor plan measuring 155 meters in length by 16 meters in width. Generous landscaped courtyards open up between the volumes, acting as intermediate spaces that allow natural light to reach both the work areas and the underground parking levels. These courtyards incorporate metal lattice screens strategically oriented according to solar exposure, filtering the light, reducing direct radiation, and enhancing indoor thermal comfort.

Offices: a culture of collaborative work

From its structural conception, the project was designed to generate open, versatile spaces capable of adapting to the evolving needs of both the company and its employees. The decision to work with a 16-meter clear span between columns eliminates intermediate supports, resulting in greater layout flexibility for the office floors and improved functionality in the underground parking, where wide internal streets facilitate circulation and optimize the distribution of parking spaces.

Based on this structural approach, the design of the workspaces follows the WORKPLACE ERRE methodology, inspired by the activity-based office model. This approach replaces traditional compartmentalization with an open, efficient, and dynamic environment that fosters interaction among departments and implements a hot-desking system, in which workstations are not fixed but are selected according to current needs. In addition, the offices include fifteen different types of environments, allowing employees to carry out various tasks: from individual booths to classrooms equipped with large screens for workshops and collaborative sessions.

The interior design adopts a palette of neutral tones that help create a calm and pleasant working atmosphere: white dominates the technical ceilings, grey is used for carpeted floors, and oak wood cladding is applied to vertical surfaces to introduce a warm touch.

Construction is currently underway on the Co-Innovation Center, located on the adjacent plot, which will complete the Mercadona Campus and mark the final phase of the planned employee relocation. The building will include an auditorium, several recording studios, and a variety of workspaces. Completion of the works is scheduled for early 2026.
